If you are a CDP reporter in Measurabl, you may use our Estimations feature for your disclosures to CDP, Sustainability Reports, DJSI, etc. This article will breakdown the methodology and FAQs of Estimations.
Estimations Methodology
Measurabl only calculates estimations for scope 2 emissions, specifically only within the CDP Carbon Emissions page. Meters with data assigned to a Leasable space paid by Tenant are not estimated because they are categorized as Scope 3 instead of Scope 2.
NOTE: Estimations are calculated if the site has less than 6 months of electricity or steam data (given the site has been owned for more than 6 months). Estimations are also calculated if the number of months of data is less than the number of months owned. If either of this criteria are met, estimations will be calculated.
Measurabl uses the following logic when calculating estimations for scope 2 emissions for CDP reporting:
-
Method 1: If a site has actual usage data for the reporting period but some months are missing data, the estimate for the missing months is the average of the actual months. If January has no actual data, average monthly usage from February-December is the estimate for January.
-
Method 2 (if method 1 cannot be used): If a month with no actual data has prior year usage, that prior year usage becomes the estimate. If January 2018 has no actual data, January 2017 actual usage (if entered) is the estimate.
-
Method 3: If a site does not have enough actual data to use either of the two methods above, then the app estimates energy use by multiplying the common floor area by an average energy intensity figure. That intensity figure comes from the CBECS 2012 survey for the specific property type. For example, offices have a different energy intensity figure used for estimates than hotels.
Estimations FAQs
- What data does Measurabl estimate?
- Only electric consumption and location-based carbon emissions (Scope 2 or Scope 3 based on ownership/lease and common area/tenant space allocation.

- What if I have partial data (i.e., data for a part of the year)?
- If the site has partial data, for example, Jan-March 2021, and you are reporting on Jan-Dec 2021, the system will calculate based on averaging the actual data that is entered for the site for missing months.

- Why would I want to use estimated data?
- Estimated data is a helpful insight to understand how your property(s) that don't have electric data performs against other properties. Since estimated data fills missing data gaps, it also allows you to receive more points on CDP and other third-party disclosures.

- Is estimated data included in Portfolio Trends or Targets?
- No, the estimated data is only included in the CDP Scope 2 export and in the CDP module (Consumption, Carbon Emissions, Word Export, Exports).
